Gambian migrant population, although relatively small in Germany, has been confirmed to be one of the highest in terms of crime statistic per migrant nationalities, yet not among the top ten crime countries of origin.

In 2024, German police registered 1,425 Gambian suspects with a refugee-related legal status. Of these, 592 were classified as repeat suspects, meaning they were recorded as suspects in more than one offence. This corresponds to 41.5 percent of all Gambian suspects.

“The share is considerably higher than the overall average for refugee-related suspects (31.8 percent) and places Gambia among the countries with the highest rates of repeat suspects in the entire report,” our sources confirmed this from Hamburg, capital of Germany.

Only Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Georgia and Bosnia-Herzegovina show comparable or higher values. Thus, a relatively small group of individuals may account for a disproportionate share of police contacts involving Gambians.

“It does not necessarily mean that more Gambians commit crimes. Rather, it indicates a stronger concentration of police-recorded offending among a subset of individuals already known to the authorities,” our source added.

Some 6500 Gambians currently have refugee-related legal status in 2024.
