Emergency respondents of the Gambia Police Force, as well the Ambulance Services rushed to the scene where the young man, identified as Adourahman Jallow and estimated to be around 28 years of age, was found hanging by his neck from a mango tree. Jallow was a returnee from Italy recently and sources said he gave in to the trauma as a result of his forced return from Europe.

It took a while for emergency response to the crime scene. Passers on the street in Wellingara, near Nema Junction of the West Coast Region, took cell phone photos of the body hanging from a rope. A neighbour who was alerted after a crowd began converging on the site, came out only to be greeted by the awkward scene of a dead body hanging from a mango tree.

“I did not know who or where to call for emergency response,” one eyewitness said, drawing attention to public information about working emergency contact lines for the population.

Another neighbour who had contact with some security sources, placed a call, resulting in a dispatch of three pick-up car teams from various police response units within the West Coast Region. Among these was the Anti-Crime Unit of Banjulinding.

“The police sealed the place upon arrival… emergency workers and crime scene team brought the body down, put it on a stretcher and lifted it on to the ambulance before speeding away to the hospital,” another eyewitness said.

The ambulance dispatched at the scene soon sped off to Banjul with a Police pick-up escort.

No preliminary public information has been released about the case yet but many rule it as suicide by hanging. Police PR office was not available for immediate comments.
